The first private cell phone call was made in 1973 but it took ten years to bring the cell phone to market. The call placed by Dr. Martin Cooper was the culmination of a rivalry between Motorola and Bell Labs to provide the first working prototype. Martin made the first call to the competing phone designers at Bell Labs from his car.
It took ten years for Motorola to release the DynaTAC 8000X in October of 1983. The good news is you could drive over the phone and the signal bandwidth was three times the strength we have today.
